A new species and three taxonomic changes in Piper (Piperaceae) from Thailand Naturalis

A new species, Piper chiangdaoense from Doi Chiangdao Wildlife Sanctuary, Chiang Mai province, Thailand, is described and illustrated. Piper trichostigma is raised to specific status and an epitype is selected. Piper maculaphyllum and P. rubroglandulosum are reduced to the synonymy of P. argyrites and P. betle, respectively. A lectotype for P. argyrites is selected.

A new species of Piper (Piperaceae) from the Seychelles Naturalis

A new species of Piper (Piperaceae), P. silhouettanum, is described from the Anse Mondon river valley, Silhouette Island, Seychelles. This species is close to P. nigrum but distinguished by its different venation, glabrous leaves, persistent elongated stipules and reduced bracts. This species is restricted to one valley where it is found in 1.7 hectares.

Los géneros Piper y Lepianthes han sido empleados como fuente de insecticidas y en la medicina natural. Son conocidas las propiedades antifúngica, insecticida, antialimentaria, estimulante, bactericida y citotóxica de muchos de sus extractos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue establecer las potencialidades de tres aceites esenciales de especies de estos géneros como candidatos para el desarrollo de productos con actividad plaguicida y antitumoral. Los aceites esenciales de P. auritum (CA1), P. aduncum subsp. ossanum (PAO1) y L. umbellata (LU1) fueron obtenidos por hidrodestilación empleando un equipo Clevenger y se evaluaron frente a Artemia salina, organismo indicador de actividad plaguicida y antitumoral. Piperaceae species have been placed among the basal angiosperm and are adapted to a variety of habitats including moist forests, secondary vegetation and dry high lands. The major anatomical/morphology features are of small trees, vines, and shrubs for Piper species, while the epiphytic and succulent characteristics are predominant forms among Peperomia species. Their secondary chemistry can be mostly represented by amides, phenylpropanoids/lignoids, and chromenes in addition to a phletoria of biosynthetically mixed-origin secondary compounds. Although several amides and lignans are known as insecticides, several phytophagous insects, among which some considered pests of economic importance, have been observed feeding vigorously on Piperaceae species....

Piper (Piperaceae) in New Guinea: the climbing species Naturalis

Sixteen climbing Piper species are accepted for New Guinea. The three endemics, P. arfakianum, P. subcanirameum and P. versteegii, are fully described. Eight taxa of unclear circumscription are noted. A new variety of P. macropiper, endemic to Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea, is described. The presence of an ant-plant piper in West New Guinea is noted.

Piper (Piperaceae) in the Philippine Islands: the climbing species Naturalis

Piper in the Philippine Islands is reviewed. Fifteen climbing species are recognized (many fewer than in previous treatments) and distinguished in a key. Most are widely distributed through Malesia, with ranges that end eastwards in the Solomon Islands or Australia. Piper myrmecophilum, the only taxon accepted as endemic to the Philippines, is ant-associated. Piper celtidiforme, once thought endemic, also occurs in New Guinea and the Solomons. The five shrubby Piper species in the Philippines are briefly described.

Piper (Piperaceae) in the Solomon Islands: the climbing species Naturalis

Eleven climbing species of Piper in the Solomon Islands are recognized: P. abbreviatum, P. betle, P. bosnicanum, P. caninum, P. celtidiforme, P. fragile, P. insectifugum (syn. P. austrocaledonicum), P. interruptum, P. macropiper, P. majusculum, and, as the only endemic, P. sclerophloeum, for which a description is provided.

Ethanol, methanol and water extracts representing mostly native plant species found in the Amazon region were prepared, respectively, by maceration, continuous liquid-solid extraction and infusion, followed by evaporation and freeze-drying. The freeze-dried extracts were tested for lethality toward Aedes aegypti larvae at test concentrations of 500 mg / mL. In general, methanol extracts exhibited the greatest larvicidal activity. The following 7 methanol extracts of (the parts of) the indicated plant species were the most active, resulting in 100% mortality in A. aegypti larvae: Tapura amazonica Poepp. (root), Piper aduncum L. (leaf and root), P. tuberculatum Jacq. (leaf, fruit and branch). and Simaba polyphylla (Cavalcante) W.W. Thomas (branch).

A study about the species of Piperaceae that are consumed by a colony of Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) in Parque Municipal Arthur Thomas (82,72 ha) was carried out. Five available species of Piperaceae were found in the park: Piper aduncum Linnaeus, Piper amalago (Jacq.) Yuncker, Piper crassinervium H.B.K., Piper gaudichaudianum Kunth and Piper sp. C. perspicillata fed on all of these species. During the spring, the most abundant item was P. amalago, but the consumption of P. aduncum was the highest. Three new species of Piper from the Guianas and adjacent areas are described: Piper aulacospermum Callejas, P. ciliomarginatum Görts & Christenh. and P. remotinervium Görts. Toxicidade de amidas análogas à piperina a larvas de Ascia monuste orseis Godart (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) e Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Neotropical Entomology

Foi avaliada, no presente estudo, a toxicidade de amidas análogas à piperina utilizando-se larvas de 3º instar de Ascia monuste orseis Godart e Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Os bioensaios consistiram na aplicação tópica de 0.5 µl das seguintes amidas: N-isopentil-(3,4-metilenodioxifenil)-amida, N-isopropil-(3,4-metilenodioxifenil)-amida, N-hexil-3-(3,4-metilenodioxifenil)-amida e butóxido de piperonila. Os valores de DL50 (mg i.a./ mg larva) das amidas N-isopropil e N-hexil para A. monuste foram 0.278 e 0.004, respectivamente; para S. frugiperda foram: 1.359 e 0.613, respectivamente. O maior valor das inclinações das curvas de dose-resposta dentre os compostos, para ambas as espécies de inseto foi obtido para N-isopropil, o que indica maior...
